Half-Navajo Janet Begay comes to Magellan to investigate the mysterious disappearance of the police chief's daughter. But the people of Magellan sense that Janet is not what she seems, and they're right.

Janet possesses extraordinary power which is tied to the storms that waft across the desert. The only person who can control her when she's caught in the storm's evocative power is Mick, a dark-haired, blue-eyed biker Janet can't seem to touch with her powers. He can wield fire and not get burned, and Janet's never sure where he goes when they're not together.

Together they investigate mysterious disappearances, which Janet fears are tied to her mother's people, the mythical gods from below the earth. They are helped along the way by Coyote and Crow, but these shapeshifting gods have their own agendas.
Book One of a new Contemp. Fantasy / Paranormal Romance series.

Winter descends on the town of Magellan, and new evil comes to call. A new county inspector declares Janet's hotel a safety hazard and gives her one week to bring everything up to code, but no matter how hard Janet and her friends work, everything is deteriorated again in the morning. At the same time, Mick is behaving strangely, and the magic mirror, Janet's grandmother, and Elena the crazy cook declare that he's "shadow touched."

Janet needs to figure out what that means and how to help him, at the same time keep Gabrielle from snaring Nash Jones. Even the dragons are no help, and Janet's grandmother seems to have submitted Coyote to her will and sent him off on some unknown quest.

Mick tells Janet that the next time she sees him, she needs to run; and Janet then discovers what a terrible, deadly enemy she would have if Mick turned against her.

Cast of Characters
Janet Begay: Raised on the Navajo Nation, Janet can draw the power of storms to feed her formidable latent magic. Without a storm, she's pretty powerless. Storm power makes her crazy, and only Mick can ease her down.

Mick: A biker who rescued Janet from the clutches of her own power. She fell in love with him, but she has no idea who he really is or where he comes from. She knows only that Mick wields powerful fire magic and can draw off her storm powers with his sensual touch.

Nash Jones: The Sheriff of Hopi County, he's an Unbeliever, not fond of people who claim they use magic. He's ex-Army special forces, a stickler for rules and regs, and might possess the most potent magic of all.

Maya Medina: A beautiful electrician with many secrets.

Fremont Hansen: A plumber who calls himself a minor mage. He has secrets too.

Jamison Kee: A Navajo shape shifter (a Changer), friend to Janet. He's responsible for bringing her to Magellan.

Coyote: A shape-shifting trickster god with an eye for the ladies. Despite his jovial exterior, Janet knows he's damn dangerous.

Amy McGuire: Nash Jones's fiancée, she's disappeared without a trace.

Chief McGuire: Magellan's chief of police and a worried father.

Additional, from Firewalker:

Cassandra Bryson: A beautiful witch with a murky past but one heck of an efficient hotel receptionist.

Pamela Grant: A wolf Changer with a sinister message.

Jim Mohan: A hiker. Maybe.

Colby: One of Mick's people, he calls himself a friend. Or maybe an enemy. He hasn't decided.

Drake and Bancroft: Dragons who prefer long, black, chauffered limos.

Glossary

Magellan: A high-desert town where the paranormal is normal.

Changers: Shape shifters descended from shamans who twined with animal spirits and learned to take their shapes. (The good shape shifters.)

Skinwalkers: Evil beings who can take the shape of animals or humans they've killed. (The bad shape shifters.)

Unbelievers: Those who live in and around Magellan and don't believe in the paranormal.

Vortexes: Swirls of mystical energy that collect in certain places in the desert. Some are gateways to Beneath.

Beneath: The previous shell world from which mankind and certain gods emerged. Those gods who got trapped below are pretty pissed off.

Dragons: Born of this earth in volcanoes, storms, and deep oceans, their number dwindled after the emergence of mankind. They consider themselves the guardians of the earth.
